Scheduling: There are limited times available, but all efforts will be made to accommodate perspective students. Because Mark is also a performing musician, available times will be during the week. When emailing for a time slot, please include all your weekday/night openings. Staggered or non-weekly scheduling is accepted with some limitations and conditions. Please inquire about further policies if planning a staggered or non-weekly schedule.
Philosophy: Instruction is geared to teach the student to teach him/herself, and increase the desire to learn. Students are taught how to learn songs on their own, instead of simply being taught one song at a time. Although reading is an option, the Zeus approach trains the mind and ear to understand and communicate musical ideas and structure without being "tied to the staff". Learning the basic structures of music is critical to this approach. Learning how to apply knowledge of those structures is even more important. Application of choices they provide is the essence of creative musicianship.
A quality student will learn to become a better musician, as well as an efficient technician on his/her instrument. Songwriters will increase their efficiency in both lyric writing and composition. AND, All will have some fun along the way!
For the intermediate and advanced students, MZ will respond to individual needs. For example: Some students have excellent technique and dexterity, but have trouble staying within a meter or rhythmic pattern. That need would be recognized and addressed. Or, often students are more advanced in their left hand development. Right hand techniques would be initially focused upon. The ability to evaluate students quickly and effectively is one of MZ's strengths as a teacher.
Credentials: Mark has a teaching degree from Northeastern Illinois U. His education has focused on language arts, communications and performing arts, as well as music theory, composition and application. He also has over 35 years experience as a performing musician, recording artist, producer and sound engineer. Go to the bio page of this site for an extensive biography.
Payments: Students reserve lesson times by the month (in 4 lesson blocks) paid in advance. Subsequent monthly payments are made on the last lesson day of each block. Contact Mark to make payment arrangements.
Cancellation policy: PLEASE READ AND AGREE TO THIS POLICY BEFORE BEGINNING LESSONS. Any cancellation must be made at least 24 hours in advance to qualify for a make-up. Make-ups are scheduled around Mark's schedule. If you cannot schedule a make-up time within 72 hours of the cancellation, it becomes void. The last lesson of a block cannot be rescheduled unless it is to a slot the same day or earlier. As a result, there can be no make-up scheduled after the last lesson date of your block. Only one rescheduling is allowed per block. If you need to cancel day of the lesson, please call. If Mark cancels the lesson, you will be awarded full credit and it will be rescheduled for any time in an available time slot at your convenience.
To further carify and explain cancellation policy: In essence you are taking a class we schedule together each month. Just as a teacher and students commit to a schedule in a traditional classroom setting, so do we. As a courtesy I allow for a make-up within the guidelines set forth above. Please do not ask for a re-scheduling that does not adhere to the these guidelines. If we both agree and are clear on the above we won't have any problems or issues in the future. Thanks, MZ
